Steering Committee: what is it?
Since 2006 the Student Stop AIDS Campaign has had an active steering committee who come to London quarterly to discuss key issues and brainstorm how to take the campaign forward.
The steering committee is an integral part of the Student Stop AIDS Campaign, ensuring that there are student voices at the national campaign meetings, providing extra communication channels between societies and helping to run the campaign nationally.
Currently there are 6 steering committee members, but this year they are all hoping to step down and we would like to have a democratically elected steering committee for 2010/2011.
We will be holding steering committee elections at the February training and here you will find out in more detail some of the specific things our current steering committee have had the opportunity to be involved with; from meetings with DFID and GlaxoSmithKline, to attending campaign meetings with Oxfam, and Unicef.
Each member of the steering committee represents a region of 3-5 societies. That committee member is responsible for keeping in contact with their network of societies and relaying information to those societies and keeping staff up-to-date with their activities.
How to get involved?
To become part of the steering committee you must commit to attending 3 out of 4 meetings a year in London and stay in regular communication with the societies you represent. In exchange we will train you up to become a confident speaker on any of our campaign issues and pay for your travel expenses.
Interested in getting involved with the steering committee? Here’s your chance!
At the February training weekend the Student Stop AIDS Campaign will be electing a completely new steering committee. The out going steering committee will tell you about what is involved and there will be time for you to go and they can answer any questions that you have.
Following this there will be an opportunity for you to nominate yourself for election, you’ll just need to introduce yourself and say a little bit about why you want to join the steering committee. Then later in the weekend each region will vote for their steering committee representative.
If you can’t attend the February training then you can still nominate yourself by sending a small email to jane.broomfield@spw.org explaining why you got involved with the Student Stop AIDS Campaign and why you want to be on the steering committee.
