The steering committee weekend was very productive - lots of discussions about what we’ve been doing well, what not so well, and the usual “how to improve communication” chat. We also aimed to make plans for next year, and to discuss the role of the steering committee.

For anyone who’s unsure about the steering committee; it was created about 2 years ago to provide a link between the national campaign and individual societies. It also provides increased opportunity for the students to contribute to the national campaign strategy planning sessions. Each region should have one steering committee representative. This year, each society will have the opportunity to nominate one person for the committee in advance of the training weekend, where we will hold elections for the regional reps if necessary.

We also had lots of discussions surrounding the Patent Pool campaign. The rest of this newsletter has more information and updates and the Freshers’ pack will have lots more detail, and here are a few things that you can be doing within your societies in the year ahead:

  • Hold an information evening, particularly if you have new Freshers involved
  • Show the animation to everyone you know, and around campus
  • Meet with your MP to discuss the pool
  • Try to pass a union motion in support of the pool
  • Try to get local media coverage - perhaps of a specific event
  • Get in touch with other societies
