Advocates for Action - another project run by Students Partnership Worldwide (SPW) - is looking to recruit five more project leaders to its team. It’s a chance to learn valuable new skills and do something about one of the most critical issues in international development.
Who are Advocates for Action?
Advocates for Action (AforA) is a group of young volunteers who use advocacy to try to ensure that all young people across the world have access to accurate information about their Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRH&R). AforA was set up by Students Partnership Worldwide in January 2007
What do they do?
AforA lobbies the UK Government, EU parliament, and relevant government departments, such as Department for International Development (DFID), to make young people the focus of development plans, highlight the impact young people’s sexual and reproductive health, services and programmes have across a huge range of development issues, and to ensure that young people are involved in the decision making processes which will affect them.
Some of the things we are currently involved in include – working with DFID to improve youth participation in the creation of their policies and strategies, updating and providing advocacy training to young people, and in depth research to inform the next stage of our advocacy campaign.
What you gain:
- Professional training in advocacy and youth sexual and reproductive health
- Project management and strategic planning skills
- The opportunity to get your voice heard by decision makers and make vitally needed changes happen
- Experience for your CV – particularly for those who want to get into development policy and advocacy sectors
What kind of commitment is required to be a Project Leader?
Commitment from project leaders includes monthly project leaders meetings held in London, which everyone attends, where we discuss what’s been done, and plan what’s coming up. Where there are specific projects to be done, we do these in subcommittees, which only meet when necessary to complete a piece of work. People opt in or out of the subcommittees depending on what they’re most interested in doing. Sub-committees report on what they’ve done to the monthly project leaders meeting.
To apply to join Advocates for Action please email a CV and covering letter outlining why you wish to join the group and what skills you will bring to jane.broomfield@spw.org. Applications are due by Friday 17th July 2009 at 5pm. Informal interviews and selection will take place on 22nd and 23rd of July 2009 and the successful candidates will attend the meeting on 30th July 2009. Please get in touch if you’d like to hear more.
