We’re holding a joint film screening with the Cambridge Chinese Salon discussion group next week (coincidentally at the start of the Stop AIDS week of action!).

The film is ”Care and Love” (2007), which tells the story of Liu Xianhong, a Chinese villager who contracted HIV through a blood transfusion during childbirth. Lack of regulation in Chinese blood transfusion practise has leaded to mass HIV infection, and some estimate that the number of people infected this way to be as high as 1,000,000. The film recounts how Liu Xianhong publicized her story, filed a lawsuit with her 8-year-old son against the hospital, and eventually received compensation. The bitter experiences of several families, and the collective effort by people living with HIV to defend their rights, resulted in the “Care and Love Group”.

    Hi Anna,
This film looks really really good, I hope you get a good turnout! Where did you find it? Would it be possible for us to get hold of it?

    Hi Catriona,

The Chinese Salon discussion group, who we’re holding the screening with, are the ones who got hold of the film - I just asked them, and they said they got it from a Hong Kong-based film company who gave them permission to screen it so long as they put their logos on the publicity, but that they could probably just pass on their copy to you after the screening on Monday (so long as the company gives permission - which they probably would so long as you use their logo too!) Might be easiest to discuss it via email? - my address is apj31[at]cam.ac.uk, or if you want to get in touch with the Chinese Salon directly you can email Hang Tung Chow (htc21[at]cam.ac.uk).
