Sign this e-action to Gordon Brown and let him know the world is still watching!
The Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and malaria (the Fund) was established in 2002 as an international funding mechanism combining the resources of some of the richest countries in the world to fight the spread of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria; diseases which currently claim the lives of over 6 million people every year. Without the establishment of the Fund this figure would increase ceaselessly.
The Fund has successfully provided treatment for 1.1 million people living with HIV as well as 2.8 million people suffering from TB and distributed 30 million insecticide-treated bed nets to protect against malaria. It is estimated to have saved over 1.8 million lives. From these figures alone it is clear to see the dramatic progress that can be made in the fight to turn these fatal yet preventable diseases around in only a few years with the right level of investment.
With these successes it is also clear to see the essential role of the Fund in achieving the Millennium Development Goals and fulfilling the promise for Universal Access to AIDS Treatment by 2010. However, in order to turn pledges into realities investment from countries like the UK needs to be stepped up over the next three years.
In 2003 the Fund incorporated a Replenishment mechanism which was created to enable sustained and predictable support for the programmes being implemented by the Fund and to increase the reliability of its resource mobilisation efforts. Crucially, it is through this mechanism that we can see most clearly whether our government is fulfilling its commitment to the 2010 promise.
The Second Replenishment conference is being held in Berlin on the 26th-28th September, 2007. The Replenishment meetings provide a highly valuable opportunity for everyone active in the fight against HIV/AIDS to speak out with a united voice and ask for specific and adequate funding to be put forward by the UK government. In particular, this meeting provides the opportunity to put pressure on the new Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, with a clear message that his actions are being watched by a voting nation that wants to see fundamental progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS. By fully supporting the Fund with the full UK share of the necessary funding, Brown can demonstrate a genuine and serious dedication to halting the spread of the AIDS pandemic.
We need to make sure he knows that we want to see him do it! Click on the links below to download the Stop AIDS Campaigner’s Briefing on Action to Fund the Global Fund and a sample letter to send to your MP about this issue.

The Stop AIDS Campaign is calling upon the UK Government to make a minimum three-year pledge totaling US$1.43 billion (approximately £703 million) at the Second Replenishment meeting in Berlin. This figure falls in line with the promise made at the G8 summit earlier this year to treble the size of the fund by 2010 in order to meet the demand for Universal Access to AIDS Treatment. This is a really important and brilliant opportunity to get active in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Let your MP know that this is an issue you want to see raised to the Prime Minister to ensure that he lives up to the promises that have been made by the UK government. The Global Fund is already saving lives, it can save so many more with enough funding. Make sure Brown keeps the promise and puts his money where his pledges are!
