HIV/AIDS in the UK: Myths and Truths
Date: Thursday 10th May
Time: 5pm to 6:15 pm
Venue: Beit Room, Rhodes House, South Parks Road (Oxford).
A presentation by the UK Coalition of People Living with HIV and AIDS (UKC),
and hosted by the Oxford Student Stop AIDS Society.
Jeff Akers and Phyllis Magombe will be speaking on:
Facts and figures of HIV in the UK
HIV/AIDS in the UK workplace and the Ensuring Positive Futures (EPF)
Programme, which won the 2006 Guardian Public Service Award. Facilitated by
the UKC, the EPF aims to ensure the rights of those living with HIV/AIDS in
the UK workplace, and supports trade unions in creating HIV/AIDS friendly
workplaces.
Challenges facing HIV positive migrants and asylum seekers in the UK.
Jeff Akers has been involved in the public sector for a number of years, and
has been involved with the training of employers and trade unions on hidden
disabilities in the work place. Jeff is on the Board of Directors of UKC as
the Volunteer representative. He was diagnosed as HIV positive in 1994.
Phyllis Magombe is an intern at UKC, and works on the rights of people living
with HIV/AIDS in migrant and minority communities.
